The Republic of South Sudan is a landlocked country in northeastern Africa that gained its independence from Sudan in 2011. South Sudan is comprised of 10 states: Central Equatoria, Eastern Equatoria, Jonglei, Lakes, North Bahr El Ghazal, Unity, Upper Nile, Warrap, Western Bahr El Ghazal and Western Equatoria.
Water Resources
South Sudan has an equatorial climate and highly seasonal rainfall. Groundwater is an important source of water, but the quality of water varies throughout the country, and is brackish in some areas. The White Nile River is a major natural feature of the South Sudan. A number of other important rivers (Bahr el Ghazal and Sobat) and their tributaries are seasonal.
The Sudd, a large seasonal wetland that can cover more than 130 thousand square kilometers during the height of the wet season, stores floodwater and traps sediments from the White Nile river.
Water Supply and Sanitation Infrastructure
Water and sanitation infrastructure coverage is very low in South Sudan. A current challenge in addressing the infrastructure deficit is addressing the funding gap to expand and modernize water supply and treatment infrastructure.[1] Currently, only 13 percent of the population has access to adequate sanitation facilities.[2]
