Moldova is located in Eastern Europe, northeast of Romania.
Drinking Water and Sanitation
While more than half of the population has access to improved drinking water, there are still communities that lack access to improved water sources. A larger portion of the rural population lacks improved water access. (6.3% of the rural population was estimated to be using unimproved water vs. 0.5% of urban population in 2012).[1]
However, these estimates do not account for the fact that many well-constructed wells are shallow and can often be contaminated by agricultural runoff. A 2008 World Bank report stated that the poor quality of drinking water is a factor witch [sic] determines up to 20-25% of acute diarrheic diseases and viral hepatitis A (especially in rural zones) and 15-20% of somatic diseases reported in the country. [2]
A larger portion of the population has access to improved drinking water than improved sanitation (96.5 vs. 86.7).13.3% of the population does not have access to improved sanitation facilities (which include flush or pour-flush toilets connected to a piped sewer system, septic tank or pit latrine; ventilated improved pit (VIP) latrine; pit latrine with slab; or composting toilet) (2012 estimate).[1]
