Sharing case studies about water is not a new pursuit. There are a number of collections of case studies in books, journals, and on the world wide web.

Generally speaking, a case study provides a story about a situation, and that story is accentuated by the data relevant to that story and is framed from the perspective of the individual or organization who prepared the case. Therefore, any case may be likely to have additional perspectives or framing that could be useful for a different individual or organization.

One of the goals for AquaPedia is to incorporate information from existing case studies, reference, and link to them when possible. Each case can be made stronger and more complete by incorporating information from cases that have been previously explored.

The case study databases linked below contain information that may or may not pertain to specific AquaPedia cases (or potential cases), but could provide information relevant for building or expanding a case study.

This list is presented as a growing resource. Please add additional sources (using the “edit" tab) or suggest them to editors (via discussion page or email).

Databases and other collections of case studies on water management

Database Name Description
Inventory of Conflict and the Environment at American University 200 case studies of conflict and environment. Some do not explicitly deal with water management.
IWA Water Wiki “The IWA WaterWiki aims to provide a platform for the global water community to interact and share knowledge online.” The site serves as a reference for all areas of water, including wastewater, environment, and management. Some cases deal with water management problems and conflicts.
Transboundary Freshwater Dispute Database (TFDD) at Oregon State University Case studies assembled to “review the literature on water disputes and related water treaties to gain an understanding of why previous and current disputes over water have occurred and to seek out lessons to be learned in preventing similar future disputes.”
World Water Assessment Programme Case Studies These cases studies are prepared to “highlight the state of water resources where different physical, climatic and socio-economic conditions prevail.” These studies also highlight challenges to be addressed in the locations studied. There are at last 64 cases in this database.
WaterWiki.net Created to “share knowledge and experience in the area of (a) development and (b) water, sanitation, water resources management, etc. that users find useful.” Partners include several UN organizations, which leads to current emphasis on UN programs and knowledge.
Pacific Institute World Water Conflict Chronology and Bibliography “The Pacific Institute initiated a project in the late 1980s to track and categorize events related to water and conflict, which has been continuously updated since.”
CASES (Climate Adaptation caSE Studies) Database (University of Washington) “The CASES (Climate Adaptation caSE Studies) database was created to support climate change adaptation efforts at the state, regional, and local level. CASES is a user-driven, searchable database that provides basic information on state and local level adaptation planning efforts.”
IUCN NEGOTIATE Case Studies The IUCN Water and Nature Initiative (WANI) has worked with 80+ partner organizations across the world to demonstrate water management that supports healthy rivers and communities. A toolkit series has been developed under WANI. Negotiate is one of these toolkits. Negotiate : reaching agreements over water makes the case that constructive engagement and cooperative forms of negotiation can help when dealing with complex water issues.

Databases for other water related information

The list below is for non-case study resources for obtaining information about water resources which may be related to case studies.

Database Name Description
World Lake Database Database hosted by the International Lake Environment Committee for more than 500 lakes from 73 countries in World Lake Database. These data mainly consists of result of a data collection project entitled "Survey of the State of World Lakes" in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
