− | |Description=The Democratic Republic of Congo is in central Africa, northeast of Angola. It has a tropical climate that is hot and humid in the equatorial basin and relatively cooler in the highlands. The equatorial geography allows for opposite wet/dry seasons in the northern vs southern half of the country. April through October is the wet season north of the Equator, but the dry season for the southern portion.<ref name=WorldFactbook>The World Factbook 2013-14. − | As of 2012, the majority of urban populations had access to improved drinking water, but about 71 percent of the rural population does not. Almost 70% of the population, both urban and rural, do not have access to improved sanitation facilities. <ref name=WorldFactbook /> Improved water sources include piped water and protected wells, but the water may not be of high quality. Improved sanitation facilities include flush or pour-flush toilets connected to a piped sewer system, septic tank or pit latrine; ventilated improved pit (VIP) latrine; pit latrine with slab; or composting toilet. Again, improved sanitation facilities may vary widely in terms of impacts for improved health.
