The bilateral commission was established 1987 and is based upon the Agreement between the United Mexican States and the Republic of Guatemala on the Protection and Improvement of the Environment in the Border Area. It covers the Candelaria, Coatam Achute, Grijalva, Hondo and Suchiate Rivers. It includes Guatemala and Mexico.

Decision-making Mechanisms

Decisions taken by the commission must be referred to the secretary of foreign relations of each country for approval by the respective governments[1]
